Little-known private folk psych trip that's head and shoulders above almost every other US folk psych record. It's hard to believe it's not from the UK, as it's instrumentation and compositional style remind you of Mellow Candle, Pentangle, Midwinter, etc. Recorded in 1971 at a local studio that must have been quite high end, because the production quality is astounding. Lyrically poetic, haunting primarily female vocals, and with entirely original compositions, this is every inch a mindblowing US private press and creates a dreamy, wistful mood typical of the style. From the cover to the instrumentation to the deeply strange and lovely lyrics, this may be my all-time fave US folk psych private. Maybe the truest US folk psych you've yet found.

Sandstone Can You Mend A Silver Thread Rarlabs
Just when you thought there weren't any more great lost obscurities from the late 1960s/early 1970s, here's a wistful, musically & lyrically rich album created by three teenagers in 1970. Not one of them was older than 18 ... but you wouldn't know it to hear the songs they created. And age is irrelevant anyway -- what matters is whether the songs themselves are good. They are! The sound is that of British psych-folk, delicate & poignant; but the band was from Pennsylvania, and the roots sound of Civil War-era music weaves in perfectly with the Pentangle & Heron influences. The harmonies & acoustic guitars are beautiful enough, but the added, tasteful touched of harpsichord, flute, recorder, mandolin, and a string trio makes it all the lovelier -- a pure & plaintive, haunting, utterly sincere air of longing for & dreaming of both the fading past & the unrealized future. It's music utterly devoid of glib irony, truly heartfelt & sometimes heartbroken, the sort of thing that simply couldn't be done today ... but thankfully it was done decades ago, and we've got the pleasure of savoring it now. Most highly recommended!
