Where the notion that 'modifying' a weapon renders it 'illegal'would come from I have no clue since the modification of firearmsof all types supports a multi-billion dollar industry. As long asthe modifications do not result in a violation of state or federalfirearms laws, I can do anything I bloody well please. It is acommon bit of ignorance that a 'sawed off' barrel on a shotgunrenders it illegal. As long as the final result is a shotgun with aminimum overall length of 26' with at least 18' of barrel, it isperfectly legal. However, registration with the BATF ($200 fee) asa 'Short Barreled Shotgun' allows one to create a shotgun withvirtually any dimensions. Registration MUST be done PRIOR toshortening the gun. Google 'short barreled shotgun' or just 'SBS'and read about it.
If your gun is not of legal dimensions, dispose of it asdiscretely and quickly as possible -- the Feds take theseviolations VERY SERIOUSLY and you don't want to do time.

The left sideplate is marked 'KNICKERBOCKER', the right is marked 'AMERICAN GUN CO. / NEW YORK'. The water table is marked with the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass bead screwed into the rib near the muzzle. The rib is finely patterened to reduce glare and allow the eye to focus on the front sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered walnut with a capped pistol grip and a checkered black hard rubber buttplate. The splinter forend has many marks and compressions scattered throughout. The buttstock has many moderate marks, compressions and scuffs scattered throughout. The checkering is dark and worn. Finish loss and darkened oil spots are present on either side of the buttstock. The buttstock shows a few splinter chips near the metal sideplates. The checkered hard rubber buttplate shows heavy wear. The LOP measures 14 1/8' and 13 1/4' from the front of the triggers to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Fair overall condition.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 45% of its metal finish. The balance of finish shows heavy finish loss throughout. There are numerous handling and storage marks. The receiver shows patina and light erosion. The checkering and serrations on the lever and safety are worn. The markings are light and almost unreadable. The screw heads are disfigured with usable channels. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fair condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Crescent Fire Arms Co. was a prolific manufacturer whose shotguns were generally distributed by the H&D Folsom Arms Company. They would apply trade names to their firearms for just about anyone who would meet the minimum order requirement and pay for the stamping die for the marking of their name, sometimes as few as a dozen shotguns for one company. This example was made in 1911 and was marked with the American Gun Company name. It has nice bores for a 100+ year old shotgun with the exception of the pitted scabs. The wood can use a little bit of work but it is not necessary. This would make a great gunsmithing project, source for parts for another Crescent or one of their trade name guns or just a nice piece to hang above the fireplace with a refinish.
