I confess to strong bias: Dumas is my favorite author. Even when his prose is at its purplest, it makes my heart beat a little faster. Book 1 in The Vicomte de Bragelonne (a single LONG work broken into three books, of which this is the first, that culminates in and ends the Musketeer Saga with The Man in the Iron Mask) was excellent.

The sprawling three-thousand-page saga of the Four Musketeers is the meerschaum pipe of adventure literature. Although it first attracts attention by its intricately carved detail, it is even more remarkable for the way it ages, for it reveals a rich range of colors as it progresses, each darker and more interesting than the one before.

The Musketeers are officially my bros, and when I read about them I imagine them as friends, which means I feel their experiences that much more significantly. I laugh out loud, I grin, I gasp, I tear up, I bite my lip and I'm pretty sure if I had a mustache I would twist it. This series gives me a very serious case of feelings.

I can 't believe how much I've been enjoying my rash of Dumas novels lately. I've read the first three D'Artagnan novels in quick succession and cannot recommend them highly enough. This is Volume One of the last book (sometimes referred to as Ten Years Later) to be followed by Louise de Valliere and The Man in the Iron Mask. Of course the novel wasn't originally intended to be split in this way, so the ending tails away a little as we leave the intrigues of Athos and D'Artagnan to put Charles I...more

Great addition to 'Three Musketeers Series.' Can't wait to get on to the next, but I must.
Thought it was amusing that the title's namesake didn't really appear much in the book until the end. And it was actually quite a cliffhanger at the end there.
I like the characters even more as they age. They're all in their late 50's now. I like their mature selves and the more mature reflections they make. I love this description of D'Artagnan at this period of his life:

This discrepancy is annoying but understandable as both the book and the audiobook are just the first part of the book Dumas originally wrote as the final novel of the d'Artagnan trilogy. Although this book is titled Vicomte de Bragelonne, there is very little about Raoul. There is a chapter of two in the beginning, a couple in the middle and a few at the end, all the plot in between has nothing to do with him. In fact, with the exception of D'artagnan, there isn't much about any of the musketeers. Athos gets the most attention. The D'Artagnan books are a trilogy - The Three Musketeers, 20 Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne. I'm actually not sure what the French name is for this 3000 page monster. It gets divided up into 3, 4 or sometimes 5 volumes. I'm reading a Kindle version which is in four volumes, each at a modest 750 pages or so. And this is the first installment.

This was, as per Dumas's usual, a fun book with an intricate story and numerous characters. I would say this is the slowest of the D'Artignan Romances, but that is probably because it is the first half of a longer tomb, Louise de la Valliere, which is often split into two. I loved that our old heroes are still active, while heralding in the new generation. Can't wait to read the second half and then the last book of the series. If you haven't read these Romances, you should!

I thought The Three Musketeers was one of the most thrilling books I've ever read. Twenty Years After was a pretty good, yet still exciting, sequel. But the flame of the series just went out in The Vicomte de Bragelonne.

This very well may have been a fantastic story, but I am rating my experience of reading it, and this edition in the three musketeers saga was way too long-winded and slow-developing to keep my interest, even though I read the whole book. It has been a long while since I've read it, to be fair, but my memories of reading it involve pain. If you are more patient than I was, then perhaps it will turn out to be a fun story for you.

I really dragged myself through this one. It was a good exercise for improving my French but I have to say I was disappointed. Boring. Lacking the feel of excitement he was able to instill in me from the original 'Three Musketeers'. I don't know if I'll read the sequel, at least not for a very long time. I'll probably skip it and read something else by him, or just go on to another French author. Perhaps I'm just done with Dumas.

The Vicomte De Bragelonne Pdf
I enjoyed this first part of the novel and look forward to the rest. That's my review. Ahem.
Except to add: Dumas is always fun to read, IMO, and this sequel to The Three Musketeers is no exception. But a word of warning--it's published in strange ways, and if you try to get hold of the book in it's entirety, you're bound to get it wrong.

I first read Dumas when I was a senior in high school. The Richard Lester directed films of The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers had come out, back-to-back, one year just after another, a couple of years earlier. I had loved the films. Both of the films are just from the one book, The Three Musketeers, and I came across a copy of it in the school library. It was very thick, but I thought I would try it. After so many adventures, so incredibly well described events that shattered the lives of these four heroes, it is really hard not to cry while coming to the end of such an amazing story.
This book is the perfect, if not sad I don't know how to qualify it, conclusion to the incredible and marvellous four friends that Dumas has put into life.

I finally finished this! Felt like it took me forever. That wasn't helped by the fact that it turns out I had the text of the next book in the series when I first started. It was mislabeled. So I wasted several days before I figured that out, then had other things that cropped up to be read first, then holidays, and lately being to nasty to walk outside (and read). It's strange to me that a book titled 'The Vicomte de Bragelonne' should feature so little of the titular character. The third installment of the d'Artagnan Romances follows a similar pattern as the first two, in that d'Artagnan is the hero whose adventures we follow, and he spends much of his time in England - a whole country away from Raoul.

I liked the first book well enough but book 2 seemed to have no point except to drag the musketeers into the center of all the (from what I glean fairly historically accurate) political events of the day. This first part of the final installment seems even worse off - more meandering and less real plot. It is a good, but in my opinion, not perfect book. Dumas isn't very consistent in his writing and some books I find more interesting than others. The reason for this is because his style and tone of drafting changes quite a lot from book to book. The action is however interesting and the characters he portrays have depth.
